Creature
[ THE BRIEF ]
Creature. is the alias of Jim Cornelissen: born in the Netherlands, based in London, a drummer and producer with session work for Yaya Bey and Cosmo Pyke, among others. His music sits between jazz fusion, broken beat and hip-hop: live drums, Dilla-style grooves, heavy 808s and time signatures that wrong-foot you. The brief: a logo and a release identity. From the EP All Now For Good to the album Where This Body Goes, My Mind Flows and its singles Memphis Grit and Ay Yo. As idiosyncratic as the sound, and recognisable at 60 pixels in a feed.
[ THE DECISION ]
The imagery had to move the way the music does. Hence long-exposure portraits: the drummer as a smear of light and motion, held in a circle, like a record. Over that, the titles in wavy letters and the Creature wordmark I drew for him: flowing, almost psychedelic shapes. One system for album, EP and singles: recognisable as a thumbnail, hypnotic at full size.
[ RELEASES ]
Every release from the same hand: a blurred portrait in a circle, a wavy title, a consistent wordmark. Album and singles sit in the feed as one family, and you recognise Creature. before you read the name.
[ RESULT ]
One visual language for everything: logo, album artwork, single covers and the player in your hand. In a genre full of faceless beats, Creature. gets a face.
